crash test dummy

Hey, Gang! Time has evaporated as the book is tangled in production complications. The fine folks at Pantheon are wrestling to actualize
the design we envision. All I have to show for the moment is a glimpse of this “dummy” book – which has the first ten pages repeated
over and over, but approximates the bulk of the final object.

And below is a snippet of promotional graphics. I’ve been traveling a bit — Last week to Minneapolis to design a mural for my brother’s design studio.
As the painting progresses, I’ll post some photos. (Thanks, Andrew and Jon.) And next week, I’m flying to CHINA – which includes
research for an upcoming book project. More soon!

  1. It’s great to see how the final product will more or less look, it must be such a rewarding feeling to flick through the final result as an artist! Congratulations again! πŸ™‚ And enjoy China!

  2. Those promotional pictures look amazing! I like the city and construction site pictures best.

Since you’re going to China and doing research, does that mean your next story is going to be based on Chinese culture?

  3. The first ten pages over and over sounds good enough for me! πŸ˜› What’s the hold-up with the design? It looks absolutely stunning.

    What’s your brother’s design studio?

Can’t wait to hear more about the new book. I have a hunch it’s going to be a giant choose-your-own fortune cookie book.

  4. Hey they Craig. Hopefully you can tell which acquaintance this is of yours from my email. I haven’t seen your pretty face around since forever ago, so I thought I would send you a secret hello. PS. You should say hi back.

  5. Hey Craig,
The dummy book is looking like quite the tome! Looking forward to the real thing, hopefully you don’t have to worry too much about the production issues. I’m sure your plans in China are already pretty well established, but if you’re looking for any particular places of inspiration, I’ve been living and travelling in China for two years now and offer my knowledge to whatever extent it might be helpful. Happy trails!

  6. Hey Craig, if you are going to be in Zhejiang province (Hangzhou area) while you are in China and you need any help please let us know. My wife and I would be happy to help you out while you’re here. We’ve been teaching here for a couple of years and we know our way around. We met you many years back at MoCCA, we’re the ones who used to put out Moo-Cow Fan Club magazine. Anyway, let us know if you need a hand or a place to stay. I’m very excited that your next project will involve China!

  7. So excited for this to come out!
My wife and I will be in Portland at the end of the month … any suggestions for fun things to do?

  8. So exciting to see some habibi in book format, even if it is just the first ten pages! It looks so nice and meaty πŸ˜€
The amount of perseverance it must have taken to finish blows my mind

  9. I’m so looking forward to finally having a tome of my very own! Congrats on the dummy book, and thanks for keeping us in the loop! I hope you’re planning on doing a book signing in Portland!

  11. I will be buying and reading Habibi for sure. Just read Blankets a few weeks ago and am still blown away. It was such a beautiful and moving work of art. It reminded me so vividly of being in love for the first time. The appreciation of someone Else; the excitement.

  12. Hi Craig, Must honestly say Blankets is one of the, if not the, most beautiful things I’ve laid my hands on ever. Can’t wait to read Habibi!
    Thanks, and Cheers,

  13. Unbelievable! This looks GREAT! I keep reading in the newspapers about the abundance of graphic novels and the tangled web of too much stuff on the market, but THIS IS IT: this is the answer! Simply great work! It feels inspired, lived, refined, … I really can’t wait πŸ˜€
